Video views and reviews: Golgi export, targeting, and plasma membrane caveolae.

چکیده
In this essay, I review videos fromMolecular Biology of the Cell (MBC) depicting various aspects of plasma membrane (PM) dynamics, including the targeting of newly synthesized components and the organization of those PM invaginations called caveolae. The papers accompanying these videos describe, respectively, the constitutive export of a mutant form of the vesicular stromatitis virus coat glycoprotein (VSVG) from the Golgi complex (Polishchuk et al., 2003); the receptor-mediated, PM incorporation of the Naþ/Kþ-pump (Bertorello et al., 2003); and the cell surface organization of caveolae (Thorn et al., 2003). As is customary, I appreciate hearing your reactions to these reviews and your suggestions of other peer-reviewed videos for possible review as educational material.

Annexin A6-Induced Alterations in Cholesterol Transport and Caveolin Export from the Golgi Complex
Annexin A6 (AnxA6) belongs to a family of Ca(2+)-dependent membrane-binding proteins and is involved in the regulation of endocytic and exocytic pathways. We previously demonstrated that AnxA6 regulates receptor-mediated endocytosis and lysosomal targeting of low-density lipoproteins and translocates to cholesterol-enriched late endosomes (LE). As cholesterol modulates the membrane binding and ...
متن کاملCaveolin moves from caveolae to the Golgi apparatus in response to cholesterol oxidation
Caveolae are a membrane specialization used to internalize molecules by potocytosis. Caveolin, an integral membrane protein, is associated with the striated coat present on the cytoplasmic surface of the caveolae membrane. We now report that oxidation of caveolar cholesterol with cholesterol oxidase rapidly displaces the caveolin from the plasma membrane to intracellular vesicles that colocaliz...
متن کاملThe scaffolding domain of caveolin 2 is responsible for its Golgi localization in Caco-2 cells.
In this work, we showed that in Caco-2 cells, a polarized cell line derived from human colon cancer that does not express caveolin 1 (Cav-1), there was no detectable expression of caveolin 2 (Cav-2). When Cav-2 was reintroduced in these cells, it accumulated in the Golgi complex. A chimera, in which the scaffolding domain of Cav-1 was replaced by the one from Cav-2, induced a prominent Golgi st...
متن کاملCaveolin cycles between plasma membrane caveolae and the Golgi complex by microtubule-dependent and microtubule-independent steps
Caveolin is a protein associated with the characteristic coats that decorate the cytoplasmic face of plasma membrane caveolae. Recently it was found that exposure of human fibroblasts to cholesterol oxidase (CO) rapidly induces caveolin to redistribute to the ER and then to the Golgi complex, and that subsequent removal of CO allows caveolin to return to the plasma membrane (Smart, E. J., Y.-S....
متن کاملBiogenesis of caveolae: a structural model for caveolin-induced domain formation.
Caveolae are striking morphological features of the plasma membrane of mammalian cells. Caveolins, the major proteins of caveolae, play a crucial role in the formation of these invaginations of the plasma membrane; however, the precise mechanisms involved are only just starting to be unravelled. Recent studies suggest that caveolae are stable structures first generated in the Golgi complex. The...
